he adorns the humble with victory. - For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.
- Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness. - The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low; he also exalts. - O come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! - Woe to those who strive with their Maker,
earthen vessels with the potter!
Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, “What are you making”?
or “Your work has no handles”? - Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven,
for all his works are truth,
and his ways are justice;
he is able to bring low
those who walk in pride. - So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
- It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave.
- And whenever you fast, do not look somber, like the hypocrites, for they mark their faces to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
- For it is written,
“As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall give praise to God.” - Let the brother or sister of humble means boast in having a high position and the rich in having been humbled, because the rich will disappear like a flower in the field.
- Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
- What are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them? - Hear my prayer, O Lord,
and give ear to my cry;
do not hold your peace at my tears.
For I am your passing guest,
an alien, like all my forebears. - Pray, then, in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be revered as holy.
May your kingdom come.
May your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven. - Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you;
triumphant and victorious is he,
humble and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey. - Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land
who do his commands;
seek righteousness, seek humility;
perhaps you may be hidden
on the day of the Lord’s wrath. - Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Very truly, I tell you, slaves are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.
- But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
