The righteous call out, and the Lord hears them; he rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord remains close to the brokenhearted, and he saves those whose spirit is crushed. | The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. |
Do not be afraid or dismayed, the Lord will go before you; he will not fail or forsake you. | Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged. |

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. | Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. |
Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares about you. | Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. |
For much wisdom can result in much sorrow, and those who increase their knowledge also increase their grief. | For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. |
For his anger lasts for only a moment, while his goodwill endures for a lifetime. Weeping may last throughout the night, but at daybreak there is rejoicing. | For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning. |
O Lord, all my longing is known to you, and my sighs are not hidden from you. | Lord, all my desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you. |
As sorrowful, and yet we are always rejoicing; as poor, and yet we make many rich; as having nothing, and yet we possess everything. | As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing and yet possessing all things. |
And I heard a loud voice proclaim from the throne: “Behold, God’s dwelling is with mankind; he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and he will be their God, God-with-them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will no longer be death. Neither will there be any mourning or crying or pain, for the old order has passed away.” | I heard a loud voice out of heaven saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with people; and he will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.” |
Banish grief from your heart and ignore the sufferings of your body, for youth and the prime of life are fleeting. | Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, and put away evil from your flesh; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity. |
They will never again experience hunger or thirst, nor will the sun or any scorching heat cause them discomfort. For the Lamb who is at the center of the throne will be their shepherd. He will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. | They will never be hungry or thirsty any more. The sun won’t beat on them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the middle of the throne shepherds them and leads them to springs of life-giving waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. |
Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. | Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. |
Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. | “Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.” |
Hear my prayer, O Lord; do not be deaf to my cry or ignore my weeping. For I am a wayfarer before you, a nomad like all my ancestors. | Hear my prayer, Yahweh, and give ear to my cry. Don’t be silent at my tears. For I am a stranger with you, a foreigner, as all my fathers were. |
Then Job arose, tore his cloak, and shaved his head. He threw himself prostrate on the ground and said: “Naked I emerged from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” | Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” |
And opens the eyes of those who cannot see. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. | Yahweh opens the eyes of the blind. Yahweh raises up those who are bowed down. Yahweh loves the righteous. |
A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son gives grief to his mother. | A wise son makes a glad father; but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. |
Return and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people: Thus says the Lord, the God of David, your father: I have heard, I have seen your tears. I will heal you today, and the day after tomorrow you will go up to the temple of the Lord. | Turn back, and tell Hezekiah the prince of my people, ‘Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day, you will go up to Yahweh’s house.”’ |
Such godly sorrow results in repentance that leads to salvation and causes no regret, whereas worldly sorrow produces death. | For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death. |
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal for the day of redemption. | Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. |
The vine has withered; the fig tree droops. The pomegranate, the palm, and the apple tree— all the trees of the field have dried up. And the joy of the people has also withered away. | The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered— the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all of the trees of the field are withered; for joy has withered away from the sons of men. |
The depths of the sea resound in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and your breakers sweep over me. | Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me. |
