- Some friends play at friendship
but a true friend sticks closer than one's nearest kin. - But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
- Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control. - Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
over those who carry out evil devices. - He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? - The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;
he who begets a wise son will be glad in him. - Our steps are made firm by the Lord,
when he delights in our way. - Because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
- Anxiety weighs down the human heart,
but a good word cheers it up. - But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”
- And he said, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
- Words spoken by the wise bring them favor,
but the lips of fools consume them. - Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have clothed yourselves with the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.
- The wealth of the rich is their strong city;
in their imagination it is like a high wall. - Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”
- You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.
- With their mouths the godless would destroy their neighbors,
but by knowledge the righteous are delivered. - It is a snare for one to say rashly, “It is holy,”
and begin to reflect only after making a vow. - He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
- And steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
according to their work. - Do not envy the violent
and do not choose any of their ways;
for the perverse are an abomination to the Lord,
but the upright are in his confidence. - So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.
- Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds.
- And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.
- For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle.
