I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. | I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. |
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. | Now go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, rather than sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners. |

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”— the things God has prepared for those who love him. | But just as it is written: “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the human heart, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.” |
Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” | But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.” |
As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? | When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to look at them? |
What a person desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. | What is desirable in a person is his kindness, And it is better to be a poor person than a liar. |
What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. | Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. |
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. | But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your charitable giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. |
As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. | As for you, see that what you heard from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. |
But test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil. | But examine everything; hold firmly to that which is good, abstain from every form of evil. |
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? | What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Far from it! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? |
You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. | But as for you, proclaim the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. |
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. | See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him. |
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. | Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen. |
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? | And who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? |
I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king. | To You, God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, For You have given me wisdom and power; Even now You have made known to me what we requested of You, For You have made known to us the king’s matter. |
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. | And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. |
But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. | Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. |
This is what the Lord says to Israel: “Seek me and live.” | For this is what the Lord says to the house of Israel: “Seek Me so that you may live.” |
But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. | But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does. |
Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. | Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. |
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. | You call Me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’; and you are correct, for so I am. |
Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. | And when they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you at that time; for you are not the ones speaking, but it is the Holy Spirit. |
You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. | For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. |
Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. | Pay to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; respect to whom respect; honor to whom honor. |
