Conversion (2/2)

  • Come to your senses and sin no more. For some of you have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.
  • Do not lie to one another, since you have stripped off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self that is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
  • If you would seriously consider my reproof,
I would pour out my thoughts to you
and make my precepts known to you.
  • No, I tell you. But unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.
  • Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the prophets of that time proclaimed. Thus says the Lord of hosts: Forsake your evil ways and your evil deeds. But they refused to listen or to pay attention to me, says the Lord.
  • Such godly sorrow results in repentance that leads to salvation and causes no regret, whereas worldly sorrow produces death.
  • Let us examine and test our ways
    and return to the Lord.
  • Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”
  • Prepare in advance what you want to say,
    and return to the Lord.
Say to him, “Take away all guilt
and give us what is good,
so that we may present as offerings
    the bullocks from our stalls.”
  • However, if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you are upright in your dealings with your neighbor; if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow; if you do not shed innocent blood in this place; and if you do not follow other gods and thereby cause your own destruction, then I will allow you to live in this place, in the land that I gave as a permanent gift to your fathers long ago.
  • When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your wicked ways.
  • Therefore, let us leave behind the basic teaching about Christ and advance toward maturity. We must not be forever laying the foundation: repentance for actions that lead to death, faith in God, instruction about baptisms and the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
  • Do I derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? asks the Lord God. Would I not rather rejoice to see them turn away from their wickedness and live?
