Fear (2/3)

  • For you did not receive a spirit of slavery leading to fear; rather, you received the Spirit of adoption, enabling us to cry out, “Abba! Father!”
  • How great is your goodness, O Lord,
    which you have stored up for those who fear you
    and which you bestow on those who take refuge in you,
    in the presence of all the people.
  • Therefore, observe the commandments of the Lord, your God. Walk in his ways and fear him.
  • Now let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful in your judgments, for the Lord, our God, will not tolerate the perversion of justice, or partiality, or the taking of bribes.
  • Oh, that they would have fear of me in their hearts and they would observe all of my commandments always. Then things would go well with them and their children forever.
  • It is the Lord, your God, whom you are to follow. You must fear him and observe his commandments and obey what he tells you and serve him and hold fast to him.
  • With the Lord to protect me I am not afraid.
    What can mortals do to me?
  • Meanwhile, the Church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed peace, building up strength and living in the fear of the Lord. Encouraged by the Holy Spirit, the Church grew in numbers.
  • Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from anything that can defile flesh or spirit, and thereby make our holiness perfect in the fear of God.
  • But for you who fear my name
    the sun of justice will arise
    with its healing rays.
    You will emerge leaping
    like calves released from the stall.
  • In God, whose word I praise,
    in God I place my trust and know no fear;
    what can people do to me?
  • Do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be afraid, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you and give you help,
    I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.
  • I treasure your word in my heart
    for fear that I may sin against you.
  • But from everlasting to everlasting
    the kindness of the Lord is with those who fear him,
    and his righteousness with their children’s children,
    with those who keep his covenant
    and diligently observe his commandments.
  • For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but rather a spirit of power and of love and of wisdom.
  • I, I alone, am the one who comforts you.
    Why then do you fear mortal men who must die,
    human beings who must perish like grass?
  • Teach me your ways, O Lord,
    so that I may walk in your truth;
    let me worship your name
    with an undivided heart.
  • Therefore, we can say with confidence:
    “The Lord is my helper;
    I will not be afraid.
    What can anyone do to me?”
  • Alleluia.
    Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his precepts.
  • Rather, I discipline my body and bring it under control, for fear that after preaching to others I myself may be disqualified.
  • And so now, O Israel, what does the Lord, your God, require of you but to fear the Lord, your God, to walk in all of his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, and to observe the commandments and the statutes that I am giving you today for your own good.
  • Then Peter addressed them: “I now understand how true it is that God has no favorites, but that in every nation all those who fear God and do what is right are acceptable to him.”
  • Blessed are those who trust in the Lord
    and whose hope is the Lord.
    They will be like a tree planted by the water
    that spreads out its roots to the stream.
    When the heat comes, it does not fear;
    its leaves stay green.
    It is not concerned in a year of drought,
    and it never fails to bear fruit.
  • When Jesus heard this, he said, “Do not be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be saved.”
  • Do not be afraid or dismayed, the Lord will go before you; he will not fail or forsake you.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified of them, for the Lord, your God, is going forth with you. He will never leave you or abandon you.

It is better to be a patient man rather than a warrior,
one who controls his temper rather than one who captures a city.
