Prayer (2/3)

  • You want something that you cannot have, so you commit murder. And you covet something but cannot obtain it, so you engage in quarrels and fights. You do not have because you do not ask.
  • In the same way, even the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs that cannot be put into words.
  • O Lord, at daybreak you hear my voice;
    at daybreak I bring my petition before you
    and await your reply.
  • During the day the Lord grants his kindness,
    and at night his praise is with me,
    a prayer to the living God.
  • O Lord, hear my prayer,
    incline your ear to my supplications.
    In your faithfulness respond to me
    with your righteousness.
  • Beloved, I pray that everything is going well with you and that your bodily health is equal to that of your soul.
  • Stay awake and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.
  • For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
    and his ears are attentive to their prayer.
    However, the face of the Lord
    is set against those who do evil.
  • In my distress I called out to the Lord;
    he answered by setting me free.
  • For I know that through your prayers and with the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will result in deliverance for me.
  • This is how you should pray:
    ‘Our Father in heaven,
    hallowed be your name.
    Your kingdom come.
    Your will be done
    on earth as it is in heaven.’
  • Therefore, we fasted and prayed to God to grant us a safe journey, and he answered our prayer.
  • Let the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart
    find favor in your sight,
    O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
  • Is anyone among you sick? He should send for the presbyters of the Church so that they may pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.
  • In my anguish I cried out;
    the Lord heard my plea,
    and I was saved from all my troubles.
  • Then it will come to pass
    that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
  • And whenever you stand in prayer, forgive whatever grievance you have against anybody, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your wrongs too.
  • While Peter was thus imprisoned, the Church prayed fervently to God for him.
  • Thereupon the Lord restored the prosperity of Job after he had prayed for his friends, and he enriched him with twice as much as he had possessed before.
  • When they had finished their prayer, the place where they were gathered together shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the word of God fearlessly.
  • If you, then, despite your evil nature, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
  • Return and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people: Thus says the Lord, the God of David, your father: I have heard, I have seen your tears. I will heal you today, and the day after tomorrow you will go up to the temple of the Lord.
  • But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
  • Arise, O Lord! Lift up your hand, O God!
    Do not forget the afflicted.
  • To you, O God of my fathers,
    I offer thanks and praise
    because you have given me wisdom and power.
    Now you have made known to me
    what we asked of you;
    you have revealed to us the king’s dream.

Then, after completing their fasting and prayer, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

I give them eternal life,
and they will never perish.
No one will ever snatch them from my hand.
My Father who has given them to me
is greater than all,
and no one can snatch them
out of the Father’s hand.
I and the Father are one.
