You believe that there is one God. You do well to assert that. But even the demons believe and tremble. | You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder. |
Jesus answered them, “Amen, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to this fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be accomplished.” | Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done.” |

Do not swerve either to the right or to the left; keep your foot far from evil. | Don’t turn to the right hand nor to the left. Remove your foot from evil. |
He said to them in reply, “Anyone who has two coats must share with the person who has none, and whoever has food must do likewise.” | He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” |
But to those of you who are listening to me, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. | But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. |
Therefore, keep watch, for you do not know the day when your Lord is coming. | Watch therefore, for you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes. |
For the carved images of the nations are powerless; they are nothing more than wood cut from a forest, fashioned with a knife by craftsmen and embellished with silver and gold. Then they are fastened with hammers and nails to prevent them from toppling. Like scarecrows in a cucumber field they are unable to speak, and they must be carried from place to place since they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they can do no harm, nor do they have any power to do good. | For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax. They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move. They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good. |
Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you. Do this in memory of me.” | He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” |
Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A person will reap only what he sows. | Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. |
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. | Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots. |
Do not assert that the past was better than the present, for such a statement is not a sign of wisdom. | Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this. |
Do not be afraid or dismayed, the Lord will go before you; he will not fail or forsake you. | Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged. |
Do not associate with unbelievers. For what basis can there be for a partnership between righteousness and lawlessness? What do light and darkness have in common? | Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? |
Because the sentence for committing an evil act is not carried out quickly, people’s hearts are prone to act wickedly. | Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. |
I have given you a command. Be strong and brave, do not be afraid nor dismayed. I, the Lord, your God, will be with you wherever you go. | Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go. |
If you know me, then you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him. You have seen him. | If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him and have seen him. |
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who has marked you with his seal for the day of redemption. | Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. |
Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render fair judgments, and show kindness and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor. Do not plot evil in your heart against one another. | Thus has Yahweh of Armies spoken, saying, ‘Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother. Don’t oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’ |
Can someone hide in a secret place so that I cannot see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth? | “Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I can’t see him?” says Yahweh. “Don’t I fill heaven and earth?” says Yahweh. |
Live in harmony with one another. Do not consider yourself to be better than others, but associate with the lowly, and never be conceited. | Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits. |
But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. | But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. |
But what I tell you is this: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, since it is God’s throne, or by earth, since that is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King. | But I tell you, don’t swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. |
Do you suppose that I cannot appeal to my Father for help and he will not immediately send me more than twelve legions of angels? | Or do you think that I couldn’t ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels? |
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. | You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. |
Do not forsake your friend or the friend of your father, and do not run to your brother’s house when troubles befall you; far better is a friend nearby than a brother who is far away. | Don’t forsake your friend and your father’s friend. Don’t go to your brother’s house in the day of your disaster. A neighbor who is near is better than a distant brother. |
