But take courage!
I have overcome the world. - Those who live according to the flesh can never be pleasing to God.
- Those who live according to the flesh fix their attention on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit set their thoughts on spiritual things.
- Hence, I advise you to be guided by the Spirit, so that you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
- For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the Spirit, and those of the Spirit are opposed to the flesh. They are in conflict with one another, so that you cannot do what you want.
- Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you should arm yourselves also with the same intention. For anyone who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin.
- The desires of the flesh result in death, but the desires of the Spirit result in life and peace.
- Rather, put on the Lord Jesus Christ and allow no opportunity for the flesh to gratify its sinful desires.
- Stay awake and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak.
- Whoever feeds upon my flesh and drinks my blood
dwells in me and I dwell in him. - Dear children,
you are from God
and you have conquered them,
for the one who is in you is greater
than the one who is in the world. - The one who sows in his flesh will reap a harvest of corruption, but the one who sows in the Spirit will reap from the Spirit the reward of eternal life.
- Even should my heart and my flesh fail,
God is the rock of my heart
and my portion forever. - The Lord God then formed a woman out of the rib that he had taken from the man. He brought her before the man.
The man said,
“This one is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh.
She shall be called woman
because she was taken from man.”
This is why a man leaves his father and his mother and joins with a wife, and the two become one flesh. - For everything that is in the world—
the concupiscence of the flesh,
the concupiscence of the eyes,
and the pride of life—
comes not from the Father
but from the world. - For everyone born of God
conquers the world.
And the victory that conquers the world
is our faith. - Preferable is the little that the righteous possess
than the great wealth of the wicked.
For the power of the wicked will be overcome,
but the Lord protects the righteous. - Brethren, you were called to freedom. However, make sure that you do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Instead, serve one another in love.
- Although we are human beings, we do not engage in battle according to human standards.
- For this reason
a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh. - And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us.
And we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth. - But from the very beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh.’ And so they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.
- I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you. I will remove from your body a heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh in its place.
- I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
Whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh, for the life of the world. - And now it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. The life I live now in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself up for me.
- Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great:
He was made visible in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed to the Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world,
taken up in glory. - He replied, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said: ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two become one flesh’? And so they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
- For we are not struggling against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, the powers, and the cosmic rulers of this present darkness, and against the spirits of evil in the heavens.
- This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God:
every spirit that acknowledges
that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh
is from God,
and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus
is not from God.
This is the spirit of the Antichrist,
about whose coming you have been told,
and that it is already in the world. - And where a single man can be overcome,
two together will be able to resist.
A cord with three strands is not easily broken. - I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything impossible for me to accomplish?
- Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you previously, that no one who does such things will inherit the kingdom of God.
- Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from anything that can defile flesh or spirit, and thereby make our holiness perfect in the fear of God.
- Do not pride yourself on your own wisdom;
fear the Lord and turn your back on evil.
This will provide healing for your flesh
and restore strength to your body. - In God, whose word I praise,
in God I place my trust and know no fear;
what can people do to me? - Whatever moves and has life will be used for your food. I give you all these things, just as I have already given you every green plant. Only do not eat flesh along with its life, that is, with its blood.
- Guide my steps in accord with your word
and never let evil triumph over me. - O God, you are my God,
for whom I have been searching earnestly.
My soul yearns for you
and my body thirsts for you,
like the earth when it is parched,
arid and without water. - I will establish my covenant with you: never again will all living creatures be cut off by the waters of a flood, nor will the earth be laid waste by a flood again.
- I am pulled in opposite directions. My desire is to depart and to be with Christ, for that is far better, but, it is a more urgent need for you that I remain in the body.
- He will never be swayed;
the righteous man will be remembered forever. - For no one can be regarded as justified in the sight of God by keeping the Law. The Law brings only the consciousness of sin.
- And I say to you: You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.
- Banish grief from your heart
and ignore the sufferings of your body,
for youth and the prime of life are fleeting. - This water prefigured Baptism, which now saves you. It does so not by the washing away of dirt from the body but by the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- God chose those in the world who were lowly and despised, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who were regarded as worthy, so that no one could boast in the presence of God.
- Hence, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
