So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. | But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. |
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. | Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. |

You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. | You lust, and don’t have. You murder and covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask. |
The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. | The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever. |
Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched? | Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? |
But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. | But, because of sexual immoralities, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. |
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. | “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are expedient. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be brought under the power of anything. |
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. | For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. |
I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman. | I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman? |
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. | Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. |
For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. | For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. |
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. | Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. |
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. | For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants to one another. |
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. | As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God. |
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. | Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. |
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. | No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. |
When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone. | Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. |
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. | Yes, in the way of your judgments, Yahweh, we have waited for you. Your name and your renown are the desire of our soul. |
Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. | By which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust. |
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. | For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. |
Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. | Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky. |
All day long he craves for more, but the righteous give without sparing. | There are those who covet greedily all day long; but the righteous give and don’t withhold. |
What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” | What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” |
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. | Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. |
Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. | Those who are in the flesh can’t please God. |
