- Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine.
- The heart of man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps. - You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.
- But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
- And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?
- For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
- A man without self-control
is like a city broken into and left without walls. - He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
- For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. - So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.
- Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life;
he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. - Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
- The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands. - However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
- If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
- Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
- My son, if your heart is wise,
my heart too will be glad. - May he grant you your heart's desire
and fulfill all your plans! - Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend,
and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity.
Better is a neighbor who is near
than a brother who is far away. - And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
- Whoever keeps the commandment keeps his life;
he who despises his ways will die. - Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.
- Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.
