| Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. | Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse. |
| Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. | Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. |
| Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! | Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits. |
| Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. | If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. |
| Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. | Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. | Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. | For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are servants of God’s service, continually doing this very thing. |
| Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. | Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. |
