- Gentle words are a tree of life;
a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. - Then keep your tongue from speaking evil

Search for peace, and work to maintain it.” - Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.

speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Those who refuse to gossip
or harm their neighbors
or speak evil of their friends. - But in that coming day
no weapon turned against you will succeed.
You will silence every voice
raised up to accuse you.
These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord;
their vindication will come from me.
I, the Lord, have spoken! - God detests the prayers
of a person who ignores the law. - We have happy memories of the godly,
but the name of a wicked person rots away. - Wise words bring approval,
but fools are destroyed by their own words. - Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
- If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
- Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
- Too much talk leads to sin.
Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. - Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
- A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

- Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
- But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.
- And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
- Though he was God,
he did not think of equality with God
as something to cling to.
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;
he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being.
When he appeared in human form,
he humbled himself in obedience to God
and died a criminal’s death on a cross. - Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
- If another believer sins, rebuke that person; then if there is repentance, forgive. Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.
- The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed,
a refuge in times of trouble. - For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
- You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
- And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”
- A friend is always loyal,
and a brother is born to help in time of need. - A wise child brings joy to a father;
a foolish child brings grief to a mother. - Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. - A troublemaker plants seeds of strife;
gossip separates the best of friends. - A single day in your courts
is better than a thousand anywhere else!
I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God
than live the good life in the homes of the wicked. - Who is the King of glory?
The Lord of Heaven’s Armies—
he is the King of glory. - And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense;
they imagine it to be a high wall of safety. - And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
- But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
