- Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine.
- The human mind plans the way,
but the Lord directs the steps. - You shall be holy to me; for I the Lord am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples to be mine.
- But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.
- For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?
- Tell slaves to be submissive to their masters and to give satisfaction in every respect; they are not to talk back, not to pilfer, but to show complete and perfect fidelity, so that in everything they may be an ornament to the doctrine of God our Savior.
- Like a city breached, without walls,
is one who lacks self-control. - He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
- Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.
- The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. - So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God's rest also cease from their labors as God did from his.
- Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives;
those who open wide their lips come to ruin. - Therefore you are great, O Lord God; for there is no one like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
- The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands. - Each of you, however, should love his wife as himself, and a wife should respect her husband.
- If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.
- Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.
- My child, if your heart is wise,
my heart too will be glad. - Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done.
- May he grant you your heart's desire,
and fulfill all your plans. - He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
- Do not forsake your friend or the friend of your parent;
do not go to the house of your kindred in the day of your calamity.
Better is a neighbor who is nearby
than kindred who are far away. - And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”
- Those who keep the commandment will live;
those who are heedless of their ways will die. - Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you.
