When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. | In praying, don’t use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. |
Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. | Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. |
Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. | Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Make his doings known among the peoples. |
It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. | So is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do. |
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. | Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, Yahweh, my rock, and my redeemer. |
Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions. | A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion. |
Rescue me, O Lord, from liars and from all deceitful people. | Deliver my soul, Yahweh, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue. |
With their words, the godless destroy their friends, but knowledge will rescue the righteous. | With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge. |
Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating. | A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. |
Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty! | In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty. |
Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up. | Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad. |
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. | If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. |
Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! | Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies. |
And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father. | Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. |
The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words. | The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked is perverse. |

Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. | Put away from yourself a perverse mouth. Put corrupt lips far from you. |
The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born. | By Yahweh’s word, the heavens were made: all their army by the breath of his mouth. |

You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen.” | Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done.” |
