- Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.
- While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
- But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.”
- To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
- Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors! - The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
- In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”
- Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
- Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished.
- The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free. - I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance.
- Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man.
- But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
- Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.
- If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
- Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
- Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
- Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.
- The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.
- No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.
- When Jesus heard this, he replied, “Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be saved.”
- And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gathered up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
- Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
- For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.
- And said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”
- Cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
- Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
- He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
- So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.
- If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
- But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”
- Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.
- Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.
- Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
- And he said to them, “Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”
- Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
- Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!
- Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
- But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.
- No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.
- Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, “There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.” But the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?” When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
- For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it?
- Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
- Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
- In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’
- If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive. And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive.
- But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
- He replied, “What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.”
- For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.
- Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
