Own (3/4)

  • Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
  • In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps.
  • For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.
  • Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
  • Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
  • But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen— that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.
  • Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
    rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
    even death on a cross!
  • Like a city whose walls are broken through
is a person who lacks self-control.
  • Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
  • “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
  • The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
  • There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.
  • Those who guard their lips preserve their lives,
but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
  • Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.
  • The Lord will vindicate me;
    your love, Lord, endures forever—
do not abandon the works of your hands.
  • However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
  • Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.
  • Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
  • Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
  • And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
  • Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
  • See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
  • May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
  • He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
  • Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.
