  • In the beginning the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
  • But he was pierced for our rebellion,
    crushed for our sins.
    He was beaten so we could be whole.
    He was whipped so we could be healed.
  • But while Peter was in prison, the church prayed very earnestly for him.

  • In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
  • He was despised and rejected—
    a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
    We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
    He was despised, and we did not care.
  • Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.
  • Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
  • May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us.
  • For I cried out to him for help,
    praising him as I spoke.
  • And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.
  • I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
  • After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.
  • Without question, this is the great mystery of our faith:
    Christ was revealed in a human body
    and vindicated by the Spirit.
    He was seen by angels
    and announced to the nations.
    He was believed in throughout the world
    and taken to heaven in glory.
  • Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to heaven again?
  • When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
  • “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end,” says the Lord God. “I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One.”
  • For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.
  • All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.
  • One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
  • Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.”

John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
