They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. | So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. | For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. |
Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. |
They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them. | How they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit. |
But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. | But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. |
You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. | Whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. |
I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. | The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. |
For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. | Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word. |
For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. | Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever. |
