- Beloved,
we are God’s children now.
What we shall be
has not yet been revealed.
However, we do know that when he appears
we shall be like him,
for we shall see him as he really is.
Everyone who has this hope in him
keeps himself pure,
just as he is pure. - Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, where he was tempted by the devil. During that time he ate nothing, and at the end of it he was famished.
- Every word of God has proved to be true;
he is a shield to those who trust in him. - But I know that my Redeemer lives,
and that at the end he will stand upon the dust. - Jesus replied,
“This is the work of God:
to believe in the one whom he has sent.” - Let the wicked abandon their ways
and those who are evil their thoughts.
Let them return to the Lord
so that he may have mercy upon them;
and to our God,
for he is rich in forgiveness. - Therefore, by a single offering he has made perfect forever those who are being sanctified.
- I am the true vine,
and my Father is the vinegrower.
He removes every branch
that does not bear fruit,
and every branch that does
he prunes to make it bear even more. - As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us. - Then he said to them, “Go forth into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to all creation.”
- For the word of the Lord is true,
and he is faithful in everything he does. - The Lord makes a man’s steps secure
when he approves of his conduct. - He has made everything suitable for its time, and he has given men a sense of past and future, but they never have the slightest comprehension of what God has wrought from beginning to end.
- My son, do not ignore the Lord’s discipline
or refuse to accept his rebuke.
For the Lord disciplines those whom he loves,
just as a father chastises a beloved son. - While experiencing temptation, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.
- In the netherworld, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham, far off, and Lazarus by his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’
- But he was pierced for our offenses
and crushed for our iniquity;
the punishment that made us whole fell upon him,
and by his bruises we have been healed. - He is the reflection of God’s glory
and the perfect expression of his very being,
sustaining all things by his powerful word.
Achieving purification from sins,
he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high. - He said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. - The Lord is good,
an unfailing refuge in a time of distress.
He takes care of those who place their trust in him. - He was despised and shunned by others,
a man of sorrows who was no stranger to suffering.
We loathed him and regarded him as of no account,
as one from whom men avert their gaze. - God gave the midwives numerous families because they had feared God.
- For the Lord is our judge,
the Lord is our lawgiver.
The Lord is our king;
he is the one who will save us. - Although it was our afflictions that he bore,
our sufferings that he endured,
we thought of him as stricken,
as struck down by God and afflicted.
