What can mortals do to me? - On one Sabbath as Jesus was teaching in the synagogue, a woman was present, possessed by a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and completely unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” Then he laid his hands on her, and immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.
But the leader of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had effected a cure on the Sabbath, and he said to the assembled people, “There are six days when work is permitted. Come on those days and be cured, and not on the Sabbath.” The Lord said to him in reply, “You hypocrites! Is there a single one of you who does not untie his ox or his donkey and lead it from its stall to give it water on the Sabbath? Should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has held bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath?” At these words, all his adversaries were put to shame, and the people rejoiced at all the wonderful things he was doing. - They shall be mine,
says the Lord of hosts,
my own special possession
on the day when I act,
and I will have compassion on them
as a father has compassion
on the son who serves him. - He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live in righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
- Blessings are showered on the head of the righteous,
but sorrow will cover the face of the wicked. - On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and cried out,
“If anyone is thirsty,
let him come to me and drink.” - Therefore, put on the armor of God, so that you will be able to hold fast on the evil day and to hold your ground with all your strength.
- No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a pot or places it under a bed. Rather he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.
- Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze on what lies before you. - As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
- So today acknowledge it and take it to heart that the Lord is God in the heavens above and on the earth below. There is no other.
- Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
that is above all other names,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth. - The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry. - I lifted up my voice in prayer to him;
his praise was on my tongue. - Can a woman forget the infant at her breast;
or feel no compassion for the child of her womb?
Even should she forget,
I will never forget you.
Behold, I have inscribed your name
on the palms of my hands;
your walls are continually before my eyes. - If you are angry, do not sin. Do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not give the devil an opening.
