Righteousness (3/5)

  • Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth of many wicked;
    for the power of the wicked will be broken,
    but the Lord upholds the righteous.
  • God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
  • In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame;
    deliver me in your righteousness.
  • But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
  • The lips of the righteous know what finds favor,
    but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
  • I delight greatly in the Lord;
    my soul rejoices in my God.
    For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,
    as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
  • Do not envy the violent
    or choose any of their ways.
    For the Lord detests the perverse
    but takes the upright into his confidence.
  • This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’
  • “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
  • The Lord is righteous in all his ways
    and faithful in all he does.
  • “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
  • Lord, hear my prayer,
    listen to my cry for mercy;
    in your faithfulness and righteousness
    come to my relief.
  • Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Defend the weak and the fatherless;
    uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.
  • Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
    For the Lord is a God of justice.
    Blessed are all who wait for him!
  • You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
  • For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
  • But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.
  • Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
  • And if we are careful to obey all this law before the Lord our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.
  • I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!
  • My soul yearns for you in the night;
    in the morning my spirit longs for you.
    When your judgments come upon the earth,
    the people of the world learn righteousness.
  • But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
  • Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.
    The ways of the Lord are right;
    the righteous walk in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.
  • Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
    He guides the humble in what is right
    and teaches them his way.

We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.
